Consultation Opens on RIDDOR Change
The Health and Safety Executive today opened a three-month consultation on proposed changes to the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) 1995.
Changes to RIDDOR were recommended in the Young report on health and safety published last year, which contained a proposal to increase the threshold for reporting workplace injuries to seven days.

Waste and Recycling Injuries Continue to Rise
The combined fatal and major injury rate in waste and recycling is more than four times the average across all industries. 416 employees per 100,000 suffer a major injury or are killed at work compared with the all industry average rate of 102 per 100,000, according to the latest statistics released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
A total of 530 major injuries to employees in waste and recycling were reported in 2009/10 – a fall of 10 per cent on the previous year when 590 major injuries were reported. Major injuries, such as amputations and broken limbs account for around one in four injuries in the sector.
The Danger in Construction
Construction is still one of Britain’s most dangerous industries – despite a significant fall in the number of recorded deaths and injuries, new statistics released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Figures released in June showed that there were 42 fatal injuries to workers in construction in 2009/10, 12 of which were to the self-employed. This compares with 52 deaths the previous year, including 20 to the self-employed, and an average of 66 worker deaths for the five year period from 2004/05. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 construction workers decreased to 2.2 in 2009/10 from 2.5 in 2008/09.
